CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people are hurt, and four people had to be rescued from an apartment building in fire in the West Ridge neighborhood Monday morning, the Chicago Fire Department said.

Firefighters say the fire started on the first floor and spread in an apartment building in the 2300-block of West Touhy Avenue.

Firefighters used a ladder to get some neighbors to safety in the bitter cold.

One woman who lives nearby, says she spoke to other neighbors who did what they could to escape the smoke and flames.

"A lady came up in the back said that she had to get out through the windows," neighbor Irene Mazur said. " She's lucky she lives on the ground floor, but that she had to get out through the windows of her apartment.

Warming buses were available to those in need.

It is not known how the fire started or how many people have been displaced.
