Local leaders call for designated gun violence prevention department in Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) -- There's a new push to prevent gun violence in Chicago.

Chicago's Deputy Mayor for Community Safety Emmanuel Andre will join several elected officials, faith leaders and others for a news conference Monday at city hall.

They want to see a so-called Department of Gun Violence Prevention created for the city.

This comes after another violent weekend in Chicago; on Friday night, at least 13 people were hurt in a mass shooting in the Princeton Park neighborhood.

Across the city, at least six people were killed in weekend shootings.

Father Michael Pfleger, Urban League CEO Karen Freeman Wilson, as well as alders and Cook County commissioners are also expected to attend the news conference at 10 a.m.
