CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago's mayor and police superintendent spoke with the West Side community about an outbreak of gun violence earlier this month.

Chicago police responded to multiple shootings in the Austin neighborhood during the weekend of August 9.

Some of the shootings were linked to a large party that had been advertised online.

Community members asked why police did not respond sooner during a community meeting on large gatherings.

"The locations changed," CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling said. "If someone changes that location at the last minute, and we are at one place looking for it to occur there, we have to get those resources and move them."

Mayor Brandon Johnson talking about the importance of community violence interrupters.

"Do you understand how hard we are working to drive violence down in this city?" Johnson said. "I know you do, the folks that are here in this room, we have people on the front lines putting their lives on the line."

The mayor also stressed the importance of adults serving as role models for young people.

Twenty-eight alderman Jason Ervin, 37th Ward Alderwoman Emma Mitts and 29th Ward Chris Taliaferro were also in attendance.
