Chicago mayoral election: Dr. Lisa Nee enters race for mayor

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The field of contenders for Chicago mayor got a little more crowded Tuesday morning as another candidate announces intentions to run to occupy city hall's fifth floor.

Doctor Lisa Nee is the latest candidate to throw her hat into Chicago's mayoral race.

She's a Chicago-based cardiologist, healthcare executive and former ICU nurse best known for exposing backlogs and patient mistreatment as a whistleblower at the Hines VA Hospital.

She launched her campaign Tuesday morning amid an already crowded field of at least eight other contenders.

Current challengers include prominent and well-known politicians, such as U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, Comptroller Susana Mendoza, Cook County Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas, former CHA Chair Matt Brewer, Liam Stanton and Joe Holberg. Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas has said she is running, but will not kick off her campaign until after the 2026 election.

Illinois Secretary of State Alex Giannoulias is also rumored to be considering a run.

Current Mayor Brandon Johnson expected to seek a second term, but has not officially declared.

The first round of voting in the city is set to take place on February 23, 2027.

If a candidate doesn't get a majority of the vote in the first election, then there'll be a run-off election set for Tuesday, April 6.
