NW Side burglary leads to chaotic scene, multiple arrests on South Side, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A crime spree started with a burglary on the Northwest Side of the city Wednesday, with the three suspects breaking into a vehicle and stealing some of the items inside. It ended after the suspects crashed their vehicle into a building and a fence on the South Side.

Chopper 7 was over a chaotic scene as Chicago police took three people into custody in the West Lawn neighborhood.



Chicago police said the incident began at about 10:37 a.m. in the 4100 block of North Greenwood Avenue. A 50-year-old man said three suspects broke into a vehicle, took some items, and then fled in a different car.

About one hour later, police saw a vehicle matching the description crash into a building and a gate in the 7100 block of South Kedvale near Pulaski, in the West Lawn neighborhood.

Police said three people were taken into custody. No injuries were reported.

CPD said the vehicle was reported stolen on Tuesday night from the 4000 block of North Oakley Avenue in North Center.

Mariana Mendez was home with her three young children when her ring camera captured images of one of the suspect running toward her back yard with police not far behind.



Ashey Gonzalez lives next door and says she never had any interaction with the suspect, but the large police response was unsettling.

Police say the entire incident lasted about an hour from start to finish. Most of the police activity was centered around the crash and foot pursuit of the suspects on the South Side. Some neighbors were concerned that they could break into their homes, but police were able to take all three into custody before that happened.

Charges are pending against the three suspects who were arrested as police continue to question them.
