CHICAGO (WLS) -- A suspect is in custody after allegedly stealing a Cook County sheriff's vehicle in Chicago and leading police on a chase on Saturday morning, Illinois State Police said.

ISP said a suspect stole the squad car somewhere in the city, and its troopers and Chicago police officers chased the driver onto the Dan Ryan Expressway.

ISP deployed spike strips to stop the vehicle on the expressway near 79th Street in the Chatham neighborhood before 8:30 a.m. Officials took the driver into custody.

Around the same time, a Cook County sheriff's officer was injured in an incident involving a vehicle at West 31st Street and South California, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The officer was transported to Saint Anthony Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. ABC7 cameras captured video of a damaged vehicle at that scene.

Authorities did not immediately provide further information.

This is a developing story. Check back with ABC7 for updates.
