Chicago police investigating man following, touching women at West Ridge Nature Park

CHICAGO (WLS) -- There have been two incidents this week of an unknown man approaching women in a North Side park, following them and inappropriately touching them, officials said Thursday.

Ald. Andre Vasquez, who represents the 40th Ward, said the incidents took place in West Ridge Nature Park, located at 5801 N. Western Ave.

Chicago police officials confirmed they are investigating, and the Chicago Park District is aware, Vasquez said.

A 53-year-old woman was struck on her body by an unknown offender around 10:15 p.m. Monday, and a 33-year-old woman was smacked on her buttocks by an unknown offender around 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, CPD said.

In an idyllic urban oasis overflowing with verdant beauty, shimmering public artwork and curious, enchanting wildlife, nature lovers reacted to the news

"It's very disturbing," Gabbie Lepse said. "It's very sad."

Lepse was among those visiting West Ridge Nature Park, a 21-acre space off Western Avenue on the northwest edge of Rosehill Cemetery, where the public is being urged to be vigilant after at least two alarming incidents this week.

"As women, like, we already have to look over our shoulder a lot, and to know that there are people out here who are doing like uncomfortable things is just mind blowing to me," Lepse said.

The offender in both cases this week fled immediately, police said.

"I certainly am going to inform my wife about it... and I hope it does not, it does not cause anybody not to come here," park visitor Mike Isaacs said. "I just hope they're more cautious about it."

For Lepse, who came to the park with her baby, the incidents are more than concerning.

"This is a very beautiful nature park, and to know that like we can't just be safe in a great community is saddening," Lepse said.

Police have not released a description of the offender. There will be additional surveillance and police and park district staff in the area, Alderman Vasquez said.

Residents are encouraged to call 911 or 833-NAMI-CHI if they feel unsafe. Vasquez also highlighted the Chicago Rape Crisis Hotline at 1-888-293-2080 and Resilience Chicago.

No arrests have been made as Chicago police continue to investigate.
