Police said at about 6:03 a.m. in the 7500-block of South Peoria Street, a male suspect fired shots at two marked squad cars, just blocks from a police station in Gresham. No officers were struck and they did not return fire, police said.
The suspect then fled the scene in a black Nissan SUV and officers were pursuing him when he crashed into two marked vehicles in the 7600-block of South Union Avenue, police said.
The suspect then tried to flee on foot and was taken into custody, police said. A weapon was recovered from the scene.
Two officers were taken to a hospital for observation and have been released.
People waking up Monday were concerned for those who live nearby.
"It needs to get safer around here. The police over here are doing their jobs the best they can," said Maurice Smith, who lives nearby. "But it takes the neighborhood to get together and start deterring this. It's an ongoing issue for our neighborhood, and it's actually a shame."
Later Monday, crews swept up debris and tow truck drivers prepared to move the damaged vehicles.
"The truck was coming from down here, and it spun around and knocked stuff out of place and knocked my car into the pole," witness Tyra Allen said.
A security camera from a building across the street captured video of the car swerving into the parked cars on 76th and seconds later a police car following. One of the cars they hit belonged to Allen. She just bought it four days ago.
"I'm kind of speechless cause now I'm out of a car. My kids don't have a way back-and-forth to everything, so yeah fun stuff," Allen said.
After the crash, a security camera shows the driver of the black SUV as he got out and ran.
Police found a handgun in the middle of the street near the car.
Area One detectives are investigating.
Chicago police want to know if the incident is related to drive-by shootings on Wrightwood Avenue, 62nd Street and South Rhodes Avenue.
One shooting took place at Springfield Avenue and 62nd in West Lawn: A 45-year-old man was killed after being shot in the head.
And in the 6600-block of South Rhodes in West Woodlawn, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen and in the arm and taken to a hospital in fair condition.
