CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two officers were among four people hospitalized after a downtown crash early Saturday morning, Chicago police said.

Police said the crash happened near South Wabash Avenue and East Ida B. Wells Drive in the Loop just after 4:45 a.m.

Investigators believe the driver of a black Jeep SUV failed to obey a traffic signal on westbound Ida B. Wells Drive and crashed into the officers' marked squad car, which was heading southbound on Wabash Avenue.

Police said the SUV's driver, a 26-year-old man, tried to flee the scene on foot, but police apprehended him and took him into custody. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition with a cut to the head.

Two other people were inside the SUV. A 26-year-old woman, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to the same hospital in good condition, police said. Another woman, 25, refused medical treatment on the scene.

ABC7 was on the scene when firefighters cut out the squad car's door in order to remove one of the police officers, who appeared to have been pinned inside of the vehicle.

Firefighters put the officer onto a stretcher and transported them to a hospital.

Police said both officers were transported to a local hospital in good condition.

Charges are pending, and area detectives are investigating.

Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
