The shooting took place at about 12:23 a.m. in the 7600-block of South Halsted Street.
Police said four victims were standing outside when four suspects approached and opened fire on the victims. The suspects then fled on foot, police said.
Surveillance video from the scene shows someone walking up to two men and opening fire. The video was stopped before the gunshots, and the faces of the men who were fired upon were blurred to protect their identities.
A 53-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man were both shot and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where both were pronounced dead.
A 35-year-old woman was shot multiple times in the leg and a 33-year-old man was shot multiple times in the body, police said. Both were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were listed in critical condition.
Dozens of evidence markers littered the ground as detectives investigated what led up to the attack.
A neighborhood resident, who did not want to be on camera, said his friend was one of the victims.
"No, he was cool. If you didn't like 'Los, you was a hater. he was a comedy. He like cracking jokes," the man said.
The resident said his friend and a woman who was walking by were the two people killed during what he described as a violent attack involving several shooters.
A neighborhood violence interrupter said the shooting came as a surprise given the area's recent calm.
"we know that there's not a lot of conflict going on amongst the groups of this area so it's pretty peaceful to say the least. So I was kind of surprised that was something like that of that magnitude happened in that area," said Reality Allah.
Police said the gunmen ran away down a nearby alley after the shooting. Friends and neighbors said they are struggling to make sense of the violence and the loss.
"He was a good, good person. You always see a smile on his face. He was a real hustler, always chasing his money wrong place at the wrong time that's all," another friend said.
No other injuries were reported. Police have not released a motive, and Area Two detectives are investigating.
