The incident happened on Tuesday at about 11:50 a.m. in the 5600-block of South Michigan Avenue in Washington Park, police said.
Uniformed CPD officers tried to conduct an investigatory stop on a man who was believed to have a gun. He was later identified as Anthony Nelson, 25 of Chicago.
Nelson allegedly did not stop, and officers chased him on foot, police said.
One officer saw that he had a gun and gave multiple verbal commands, which were disregarded, according to CPD.
An officer then shot at Nelson. He was grazed on his stomach and right arm, police said.
On Thursday, Nelson was charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer and one felony count of possession of a firearm as a repeat felony offender.
An officer was taken to a local hospital for observation. A gun was recovered on the scene, police said.
The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
The man's mother said she has not been able to see her son in the hospital because he's in custody. She said a nurse told her he is stable.
Nelson was in the area visiting family and on the phone with his eldest sister while on his way to a nearby store, when the confrontation with police unfolded, his mother Shelene Foster said.
"She was on the phone talking to him. Next we know, I hear her screaming. I come out, and I hear them tussling with my son. 'Give us the bag; give us the bag.' What did you all want his bag for? And the next thing we know we hear gunshots, three times. The last thing he said after he was shot was, 'sister, they shot me,'" Foster said. "If he wasn't standing on the corner hurting nobody, he wasn't selling drugs. He wasn't doing anything, just because you seen him with a bag on him?"
His mother does not deny that her son has a criminal record, but believes that, in this specific case, the shooting was not merited.
