The shooting happened around 3:36 p.m. in the 11700 block of South Normal Avenue in West Pullman, Chicago police said.
A 27-year-old man was approached by a 16-year-old boy who pulled out a gun and attempted to rob him, police said. The man took out a handgun of his own and shot the teen suspect in the chest.
The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronoucned dead. His identity has not been released.
Two handguns were recovered at the scene, police officials said.
Police did bring the 27-year-old man in for questioning, but as of Wednesday evening no charges have been filed.
No further information was available as Chicago police continue to investigate.
