Chicago police responded to the call at about 9:57 a.m. in the 7600 block of South Emerald Street in Auburn Gresham.
Family and friends came to the scene, at first in mourning before turning the gathering into a celebration of life for South Side basketball legend Tim Bankston.
The man was found with a gunshot wound to the abdomen inside a home, police said. He died at the scene.
Chicago police said no other injuries were reported.
Relatives of the victim said the scene is a friend's home, and it was that friend who found him.
Bankston is most remembered for leading Simeon High School to a basketball state title in 19-84.
He then went on to play at Bradley and Loyola universities.
So far, police have made no arrests.
