LANSING, Ill. (WLS) -- A 10-year-old Dolton girl critically injured in a south suburban apartment fire on Monday night has died, officials said Wednesday.

The Lansing Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched to the 2900-block of Bernice Road around 7:30 p.m.

There, first responders saw heavy smoke billowing from a two-story building with a juvenile victim trapped inside. Additional departments were brought in to battle the fire.

Crews rescued the girl under heavy fire conditions and extinguished the flames within 30 minutes.

The girl was taken to Munster Community Hospital before being taken to Comer Children's Hospital. The child later died.

"The Village of Lansing and the men and women of our Department offer our deepest condolences to the family during this tragic time," fire officials said.

A Lansing police officer was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation before being released on Monday night.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.
