Community, faith leaders demand reopening of West Suburban Medical Center

OAK PARK, Ill. (WLS) -- West Side faith leaders plan to come together Tuesday hoping to save the shuttered West Suburban Medical Center.

They plan to share how the closure is impacting people in the community they say don't have adequate access to health care.

The ABC7 I-Team has been following this story closely.

The fate of West Suburban Hospital remains unclear since a judge rejected the push to have West Suburban taken over by a third party.

Hospital staff, the faith community and neighbors had hoped the hospital would reopen this summer after abruptly closing in March.

West Suburban is operated by Resilience Healthcare which also ran the now shuttered Weiss Memorial.

There are also questions about how 35-million dollars in state funds were used.

Those who want the private safety net hospital to reopen told the I-Team, the hospital's current CEO has an obligation to the community.

"He has the burden of proof to prove that he really does care about the community and that he is going to use whatever funds he has to fix the things that hospital needs to function," former West Suburban Medical Center Nursing Director Sylvia Williams said. "That's on him, not on us."

"They have not shown any framework of being able to really care for the neighbors and community members that need these services," Bishop Dwight Gunn said.

Some limited services remain ongoing at the hospital.

The I-Team previously reported state investigations are underway into how taxpayer dollars were spent at both West Suburban and Weiss before they shutdown.

A federal license for West Suburban Medical Center is set to expire in September.
