Chopper 7 was over the scene near the Koppers Inc. plant in the 3900 block of South Laramie in Stickney on the border of Cicero.
Fire trucks could be seen laying down multiple lines of water on a large tank, and it appears the tank had ruptured and was damaged with the lid hanging off.
Video posted to the Citizen app showed flames and a large plume of black smoke rising above the plant.
"The Stickney Fire Department has notified us that the fire has been extinguished and air quality testing is showing no impact," a safety alert from the Town of Cicero read in part. "Still, out of an abundance of caution, Cicero residents in the area should close all windows to their home and shelter in place."
Residents were later given an all clear notice as Stickney fire officials said the there was no hazard.
The fire drew a massive response from multiple agencies, including a hazmat unit from Bedford Park. Chicago fire officials said CFD crews assisted Stickney with assets.
Earlier this month, Koppers, which produces wood products and wood treatment chemicals, announced a conditional plan to discontinue production activity at the Stickney plant.
Koppers released the following statement:
"On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, an isolated fire occurred at the Koppers facility in Stickney, Illinois. All employees in the area were evacuated safely, and a portion of the plant will remain shut down to manage the situation. Emergency responders, in coordination with key plant personnel, have extinguished the fire and will continue to monitor the situation. Koppers is committed to the safety of its employees, communities and the environment, and will take necessary steps to determine the root cause and institute any appropriate corrective actions. We extend our appreciation to the emergency responders for their swift response and ongoing assistance."
It was not immediately know might have caused the fire or if anyone was injured.
