CHICAGO (WLS) -- The man convicted of killing Chicago Police Officer Ella French could face a sentencing hearing in September.

Emonte Morgan's defense attorneys filing a motion for a new trial.

The 23-year-old appeared in criminal court Tuesday morning dressed in a black and white striped jumpsuit. He was shackled at the wrists with braids in his hair and under heavy police guard.

Morgan was found guilty in March of murdering Chicago Police Officer Ella French and wounding her partner Officer Carlos Yanez who attended court beside French's mother.

Emonte Morgan faces life in prison.

The shooting happened in Englewood in August of 2021 during a traffic stop as police and Morgan, who had a gun in his waistband, scuffled in the backseat of an SUV.

His brother Eric took a plea deal for weapons charges in the case. Jamel Danzy, the man convicted of buying the gun that killed Officer French, was sentenced in December of 2022 to 2.5 years in prison.

In relation to this motion for a new trial, Emonte Morgan's public defender has accused prosecutors of making inflammatory statements that may have swayed the jury.

The judge said she will hear that argument on September 11 and depending on her ruling, it could move to sentencing that same day.
