EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- Evanston police believe there is not a missing swimmer in Lake Michigan after crews searched the water on Monday afternoon.

All Evanston swimming beaches were closed on Monday afternoon after there were reports of a swimmer going missing at Greenwood Beach in the 1100-block of Lake Shore Boulevard.

Initially, there were reports of a person missing after a lifeguard reported seeing someone go under and not come back up around 3:15 p.m.

A heavy fire and police response was seen at Lee Street Beach, Dempster Street Beach and Church Street Beach. Authorities urged the public to avoid the Church Street boat ramp because fire and rescue were using it.

But after a thorough search and investigation, the evidence indicated no one was missing.

Fire and police units were in the process of clearing from the lakefront around 6 p.m.

Beaches will reopen on Tuesday.
