A jury found Sean Grayson guilty of second-degree murder in October.
He shot Sonya Massey in her Springfield home last year.
Grayson's attorneys argue he was not able to properly prepare a defense, because he was detained before his trial.
Attorneys are also questioning some of the evidence that was allowed or not allowed to be used during the trial.
