Celebration continues at Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines

DES PLAINES, Ill. (WLS) -- Despite the bitter cold, faithful Catholics have been out all hours of the night into the early morning Friday, making the pilgrimage to north suburban Des Plaines to pray at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Some say they've been on their pilgrimage for more than seven hours.

Altogether, more than 300,000 people are expected to visit the shrine, as many often pray for guidance in times of need, bringing flowers and paying their respects to the Virgin Mary.

Rosio Hernandez usually walks here every year, about 11 miles from her home in Chicago, she says.

"Bitter cold, we've been doing this for the last four or five years and today, I'm in a wheelchair, so she is doing the favor to bring me," she said.

It's a 24-hour celebration that began Thursday night, allowing people to come closer to one another and creating special traditions for many families.

This year, however, the ongoing immigration crackdown has people concerned so that might impact turnout.

Church leaders say, however, events will happen as scheduled and federal agents will not be allowed on church grounds, without arrest warrants.

And if you feel unsafe, all events will also be streamed online.

There are a number of events happening throughout the day with a Mass or praying of the rosary - just about every hour.

And a closing mass celebration is scheduled for 7 p.m.
