Citypoint Community Church distributed $25 gas cards to people who attend morning services on Mother's Day.
The goal was to give away $5,000 in free gas on Sunday.
The church said hundreds, including longtime members and first-time visitors showed up.
Cards were distributed during the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services at the church at 43rd and South Prairie.
The church said the initiative kicked off last Sunday, where the church distributed its first $300 in gas cards.
Pastor Demetrius Davis let the initiative after the church recognized how rising gas costs were affecting everyday Chicagoans.
Since the Sunday event had such success, Citypoint is looking for supporters to help contribute to the church's $5,000 giveaway goal.
