Officer responded around 6:29 p.m. Saturday for a call of a shooting in the 400 block of Madison Street in Gary, Indiana, police said.
A 9-year-old gunshot victim was found at a residence at the location, officials said. They were taken to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
The gender and identity of the child has not been released by local officials.
A source told ABC7 Chicago that the child who died was a 9-year-old boy, and he was driven to a hospital by relatives.
"The tragic nature of this event underscores the critical importance of responsible gun ownership and rigorous gun safety practices," a news release from the Gary Police Department read in part. "Every firearm owner has a duty to ensure that weapons are properly secured and stored away from minors and unauthorized individuals to prevent accidental shootings and devastating losses."
