Elderly man found dead after house fire in Hammond, officials say

HAMMOND, Ind. (WLS) -- An elderly man was found dead early Saturday after a house fire in northwest Indiana.

Firefighters responded to a fire around 4:40 a.m. in the 5400 block of White Oak Avenue, a residential area in Hammond, Indiana, fire department officials said.



The first responders were notified that a person might still be inside the burning building.

A man in his 70s was found inside the building, fire department officials said. He was pronounced dead.



The man's identity and exact age were not yet known.

No further information about the cause of the fire was available.
