Chicago police said the shooting happened just after 12:15 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood's 700-block of North Christiana Avenue.
Investigators said six people were standing near an alley when two vehicles approached and multiple armed offenders got out before opening fire.
Police said all six people were struck by gunfire. One man, who the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified as Michael Howard Jr., died from his injuries.
The youngest victim, a 14-year-old boy, was shot in the thighs and transported to Stroger Hospital, according to police. A 24-year-old man who was shot in the leg and stomach was initially reported in critical condition. Four other men, 18, 21, 24, and 26 years old, were initially reported in good condition.
Police said a seventh victim, a 30-year-old woman, was inside a vehicle when she was struck by gunfire. Investigators said she crashed into a CTA bus after being hit. She was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital and was initially reported in good condition. The CTA bus driver was also taken to a hospital for observation, police said.
The shooting unfolded in broad daylight as neighbors were going about their Sunday afternoon. Belinda Lynn-Wiley said she and her family were getting ready to leave for church when she heard the gunfire.
"I pray and just ask God to clean up this area. It was a lot better. But today was like shocking."
Lynn-Wiley said she immediately noticed the volume and intensity of the gunfire.
"We were getting ready for church. Me, my grandchildren, everything. We just had a whole lot of, like 'bam, bam' like an army or something."
She said gun violence is not uncommon in the neighborhood, but described Sunday's shooting as different from what she typically hears.
"It wasn't a normal shot," she said. "And I was like, well, Lord, I'm not going to fear. I'm going to the house of the Lord, going right in the door."
Community activist James Aziz said the focus now should be on promoting positivity and supporting young people in the neighborhood.
"We just got to start promoting more positivity because there's a lot of positivity that's going on with the youth that's going on with people. But the truth of the matter is, a lot of times that's not what's exposed."
Neighbors have been asking for more support and resources to address violence in the community.
"It's like every night, I live upstairs, you always hear something. Chicago Avenue, something--somebody got shot or, you know, it's just the drugs, the people walking around."
Chicago police have not announced any arrests. Area Four detectives are investigating.
