Community rallies to sell tamales for vendor arrested by ICE near Home Depot on SW Side

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The community came together Friday morning to continue selling tamales at the very spot Laura Murillo was at Thursday, working as a food vendor, when she was taken into custody by immigration enforcement officers.

"We bought out her tamales, took over her shift and we sold those tamales to fundraise for her." Berto Aguayo, co-chair of policy at Latino Leadership Council, said.

Supporters are not letting her ICE arrest stop them from continuing Laura Murillo's work in the community.

"We've gotta do this for each other," Aguayo said. "Street vendors are scared to even go to work. Everybody has to do this, buy out your street vendor, take over their shift, help them get through these tough times."

Laura's daughter spoke tearfully about the effort.

"It's like a roller coaster of emotions," she said. "I woke up missing my mom, so it was hard you know? But right now happy."

She said she drove by 47th & Western Thursday to check on her mom. Her van was there, but she was gone.

The 54-year-old mother of four was one of multiple people targeted in an ICE raid at this Home Depot in the Back of the Yard's neighborhood, where some day laborers set up looking for work. Her family says she has no criminal record.

A regular customer who sees Laura every day, Rosie Hueso said she wanted to keep supporting her friend's family.

"It's very upsetting because she's not doing anything wrong but just selling her tamales and it's very upsetting just to see them taking people just like that," Hueso said.

The public's support is fueling Laura's family to keep fighting.

"I don't know where my mother is at, I don't know how my mother is doing, and that's what's keeping me going," her daughter said. "She needs to be here. And even if she doesn't end up with us, we're gonna go wherever she goes we're gonna follow her no matter where, but we're definitely gonna put up a fight."

Organizers said they'll continue supporting and educating the community with a "know your rights" campaign, encouraging people to unify and protect one another.
