CHICAGO (WLS) -- Attorney General Kwame Raoul outlined the actions taken by his office to defend the rights of Illinois residents.

Raoul held a news conference on Tuesday, marking one year into President Donald Trump's second term in office.

Over the past 365 days, Illinois has filed more than 50 lawsuits.

The attorney general said the state is locked in a series of legal battles with the Trump administration challenging everything from federal funding freezes to "aggressive and unconstitutional" immigration enforcement tactics.

Raoul said his office has been trying to combat what they deem unlawful actions in Trump's first year of his second term.

This includes Customs and Border Patrol tactics and National Guard deployment.

President Trump has signed many executive orders the past year aimed at reducing federal bureaucracy, expanding immigration enforcement that's lowered illegal border crossings, and signed major tax legislation, which proponents argue, has lowered taxes for many Americans.

Raoul spoke about the strain the legal battles are putting on his staff.

"Just one day after the inauguration, together with my fellow attorneys general, we filed our first lawsuit during the administration to protect birthright citizenship," he said. "As a proud son of Haitian immigrants born at the time that my mother was not yet naturalized, I am a birthright citizen. So, our first action could not have been more personal for me. As a survivor of the cancer that took my father and both my grandfathers, protecting funding for cancer research could not be more personal for me."

Raoul said the AG's office has fought to protect voter registration requirements, public health programs, like infectious disease labs, birthright citizenship from being terminated, and funding for critical medical care.

In total, the AG's office says it's protected over $6.6 billion dollars in state funding.

Earlier this month, Illinois and Chicago sued the Trump administration accusing the feds of unleashing an "organized bombardment" to coerce state and local officials to change their immigration policies.
