OAKWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- Gov. JB Pritzker met with lawmakers from Texas Friday, as Democrats try to map out a strategy to respond to Republican congressional redistricting plans ahead of the 2026 elections.

President Donald Trump has called on Texas Republicans to take the rare step of redrawing congressional maps mid-decade.

What Texas does could prompt a response from Democrat-controlled states, including Illinois.

Pritzker met with those Texas Democrats in the Oakwood community, leaving the door open for possible map changes in Illinois, while calling the president's push in Texas nothing short of electoral cheating.

Oakwood is about 30 miles east of Champaign.

Pritzker hosted the meeting with state representatives from Texas, and suggested that Democrats fight back against gerrymandering moves by Republicans in Texas.

"So as far as I'm concerned, everything's on the table in reaction to that. But I'd like them to understand that if they're going to take this drastic action, then we also might take drastic action to respond," Pritzker said.

Texas Republicans are pushing for new congressional maps to help the party pick up some additional seats in the U.S. House.

The president's party usually does not fare well in the mid-term elections, and Democrats are hoping to win back control.

"First of all, they're changing the rules in the middle of the game. That's the way I look at it. This is cheating, and very importantly what they see is that they're headed for defeat in 2026. And they want to prevent that defeat by changing the rules," Pritzker said.

The redistricting move has sparked protests at the Texas state Capitol. And while Republicans in Illinois say they don't condone the mid-decade gerrymandering there, they also decried the 2021 remapping in Illinois, which took away one Republican congressional seat.

Illinois' maps, like those in Texas, have been graded an "F" by the Princeton Gerrymandering Project.

"There is no bigger hypocrite on the topic of gerrymandering than Gov. JB Pritzker. He ran on the promise of delivering fair maps to the people of Illinois," said state Rep. Ryan Spain, a Republican from Peoria and deputy minority leader. "He made me a personal promise that he would work on this topic, and he signed the most blatantly partisan gerrymandered maps in the entire country."

Things got a bit testy when one Texas representative was pushed on whether Democrat-controlled states should retaliate with their own gerrymandering.

"I'm not gonna. We're not gonna go tell this governor or any other governor what the hell to do in their state; they'll figure it out," said state Rep. Richard Peña Raymond, a Texas Democrat.

What remains to be seen if Texas follows through with a remap is how many other states, either controlled by Republicans or Democrats try and follow suit in the midterm election battle for control of the U.S. House.
