The baby was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she is listed in good condition, to be checked out. Police have not said where she was located or with whom. She is believed to be Smith's granddaughter.
Chicago firefighters responding to a smoke alarm at the apartment in the 100-block of North Wood Street around 9 p.m. Monday found Smith's body on the couch. Food was burning on the stove.
A neighbor told family members she heard four or five gunshots but no shouting or fighting.
"Just some gunshots. She says she thought it came from outside, but she called around. Nobody said they heard it, so she knew it had to come from inside the building," Tyquisha Eason, who lives across the street, said.
Police call the homicide a domestic situation, but did not say if they have identified a suspect.
"It's crazy. I cannot believe that. It happens every other day, but not like this. Actually killing somebody. You might hear some shooting around and stuff like that, but not somebody getting shot like that in a unit," Jose Rivera, maintenance worker, said.
