Jacqueline Villaseñor, a former Chicago police officer, pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter.
Authorities said that she and German Villaseñor, who was also a CPD officer, were arguing at their Northwest Side home after an alleged affair in November of 2021.
She allegedly pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot herself, according to court documents.
Both struggled over the weapon, and he was shot.
He died of a single gunshot wound at an area hospital.
Nearly four years after the deadly shooting, Villaseñor struck a plea deal at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
A judge sentenced her to six years and four months in prison; she will be given credit for the about three years already served.
And, with sentencing guidelines, she will likely only serve seven days.
Both were off-duty at the time of the shooting.
In court, Villaseñor tearfully told the judge, "There is not a day that goes by that I don't miss him."
"This is a real tragic case. This is a case where a husband and wife obviously in trauma, a very bad situation. And something very unfortunate happened," Jacqueline Villaseñor's attorney Tim Grace said. "Jacqueline produced a weapon and was intent to harm herself. Her husband, German, a great police officer, attempted to stop her. And the gun went off."
Local advocates representing Villaseñor's parents reacted to the sentence Tuesday.
"They are not 100 percent in agreement with it, but they respect the decision of the court," said Pastor Julie Contreras, with United Giving Hope. "A few days serving in the Illinois Department of Corrections: We've seen that special treatment today, again today for Jacqueline Villaseñor and her crocodile tears."
German Villaseñor's parents allege Jaqueline was given special treatment when she was processed and charged because she was a police officer. But due to the father's poor health, they supported the plea deal.
"His parents are elderly, and his father is ailing. And he didn't think he would ever see justice if they went to trial," Contreras said.
In a victim impact statement written by German Villaseñor's mother, Leticia Gonzalez, she said, "Justice for my son Chicago Police Officer German Villasenor will bring a little peace and it will give our heartbroken family closure."
