Authorities say Josh Hunsucker staged his own kidnapping in 2023 and accused his in-laws of injecting him with an unknown substance.
Hunsucker's attorney spoke about his motion to move the trial out of Gaston County. They say the case has gotten a lot of attention in the family's hometown of Mount Holly.
Hunsucker's wife, Stacy, died in 2018.
He is accused of poisoning her by putting lethal doses of eyedrops in her drinks over a course of weeks.
But while out on bond in 2023, prosecutors say he intimidated and harassed his late wife's parents.
He's accused of using zip ties in a staged kidnapping and claiming his in-laws injected him with an unknown substance.
That same motion also accused him of trying to poison his own daughter by using the same substance that killed his wife, causing her to have several medical conditions.
In court documents, the state also said it had great concern for the safety of his kids and Stacy's parents.
A judge revoked Hunsucker's bond, sending him back to jail.
Prosecutors also announced some of the charges would be tried separately and the possible trial date for the murder case on September 8.
Prosecutors say Hunsucker poisoned his wife in an effort to collect life insurance money and that he tried to do the same with the couple's 11-year-old daughter.
