CHICAGO (WLS) -- A judge granted a preliminary injunction late Friday in the city of Chicago's lawsuit against the Trump administration over the holdup in giving out emergency preparedness funding.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration filed the federal lawsuit against President Donald Trump's administration, alleging that the Department of Homeland Security tied longstanding funding that pays for cybersecurity tools, hazmat suits, first responder salaries and more to "unlawful conditions" outlawing the city's "diversity, equity and inclusion" efforts.

Those conditions would require the city to certify that it does not operate programs that advance or promote DEI.

The amount at stake is relatively small, as Chicago could lose up to $10 million next year, but the city joined seven other cities and one county in the lawsuit.

Late Friday, Judge Manish Shah granted the plaintiffs' request for a preliminary injunction.

The case is set to return to court on Dec. 10.
