WASHINGTON D.C. (WLS) -- According to officials, San Antonio mayor Julian Castro will be nominated as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He would replace current secretary Shaun Donovan who is tapped to lead the Office of Management and Budget.
Castro has been a rising star in politics since Obama chose him to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Castro, 39, is also considered to be a possible vice presidential pick in 2016.
If Castro is nominated to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development and is then confirmed by the Senate, he would become one of the highest ranking Hispanic officials in the Obama administration.
The White House has not yet made an official announcement concerning his position.
Current HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan has reportedly been offered the budget director job and has accepted, though the White House has not confirmed that either. If confirmed by the Senate, Donovan would take over the position from Sylvia Matthews Burwell, who was nominated to lead the Department of Health and Human Services after Kathleen Sebelius resigned this year.
