EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) -- A man has been charged in connection with a north suburban home invasion, police said.

Evanston police responded to a report of a burglary in the 500-block of Chicago Avenue on March 10.

The homeowner told police that a man kicked the back door in and entered the home. The man then reached for a knife in the kitchen and started making threats, the homeowner told police.

Police said the residents were able to secure themselves in another room until officers arrived.

Responding officers found the suspect, Justin Hernandez, inside the home near the rear door, police said. Hernandez, a 32-year-old Evanston man, had suffered a serious injury to his left arm, which was heavily bleeding.

Police took Hernandez into custody, and he was taken to a local hospital. How he was injured was not immediately clear.

The residents of the home were not injured.

Officers arrested Hernandez after he was released from medical care on Wednesday. He has been charged with one felony count of home invasion.

Hernandez is being held at the Cook County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 8 at the Skokie courthouse.
