Lawsuit claims CPS security guard sexually assaulted high school student

CHICAGO (WLS) -- There are new legal trouble for Chicago Public Schools.

A lawsuit now says the district never reported alleged sex abuse years ago by a female security guard at a high school.

It's the latest in a series of sex abuse allegations against the district.

The victim is being referred to as Jane Doe.

ABC7 Chicago is not naming the security guard in question because no charges have been filed against her.

The alleged abuse happened well over a decade ago. Attorneys filed the lawsuit Tuesday, saying CPS buried the allegations, with the help of the security guard's mother, who at the time was said to be part of Farragut Career Academy's administration office.

"They failed her repeatedly for years. The impact on her life is permanent," said Bryce Hensley, founding partner of Gould Grieco & Hensley.

It's been nearly three years since a security guard at Farragut Career Academy in Little Village was arrested and charged with raping a student there. But, as it turns out, he may not have been the first.

Attorneys claim that their client, now in her 20s, was groomed and repeatedly sexually assaulted by a female security guard at Farragut between 2012 and 2015.

"The security guard offered her rides to and from sporting activities. And then it progressed," said Jennifer Cascio, a partner at Gould Grieco & Hensley.

The contact allegedly began when the victim, while a freshman at Farragut, was referred to the security guard by the guard's own mother as someone who could provide guidance regarding the high school's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. But the abuse was not reported until 2015, when the guard's wife came forward with what she had recently discovered.

"Explicit messages, inappropriate messages between an adult and a minor," Cascio said.

The abuse they say went unreported to either the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services or police. And the student transferred to another school at the suggestion of the security guard's mother. Veiled threats, allegedly regarding the family's immigration status, were allegedly used against them.

"The school let it go because the security guard said it didn't happen," Cascio said.

It was just last year a report issued by the Office of the Inspector General's Sexual Allegations Unit issued "55 reports with substantiated findings of misconduct" involving CPS employees.

In one case, involving Lawndale High School, also in Little Village during the 2010s, at least seven employees, including former Dean Brian Crowder, were found to have sexually assaulted students there. Crowder is now serving a 22-year prison sentence.

CPS said they don't comment on ongoing litigation, but that "Chicago Public Schools prioritizes and takes seriously its responsibility to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all students. Since that time, the District has made substantial improvements in how we train, investigate, respond and support victims when allegations of sexual misconduct arise."

Attorneys said the abuse seems to have happened off the school's campus, saying the security guard continued to work at Farragut until 2018, when she failed a background check. No criminal charges against her have ever been filed. And she now lives out of state.
