MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WLS) -- The man charged with shooting a sheriff's deputy inside a hospital in Indiana appeared virtually in court Friday.

A judge set bond for Sharod Grafton of Chicago at $100,000.

Prosecutors also read out the charges that Grafton is now facing. They include attempted murder, use of a firearm to inflict serious bodily harm, auto theft and battery to a public safety officer.

Friday was Grafton's first time appearing in court since the shooting that left La Porte County Deputy Jon Samuelson with severe injuries in the Michigan City hospital.

Friday's hearing also came after Grafton's first appearance was postponed because the previous judge recused themself saying their impartiality might be reasonably questioned.

Investigators said La Porte County Sheriff's Deputy Samuelson was trying to be a good Samaritan when he stopped to help out Sharod Grafton, who was believed to be a stranded driver at the time.

Police accuse Grafton of pulling out a gun and shooting Deputy Samuelson three times.

A court filing said the gun jammed when Grafton stood over him and tried to shoot him again.

One of the bullets that hit Deputy Samuelson lodged in his spine, according to the filing. He may be paralyzed from the chest down.

The sheriff's department said Deputy Samuelson is communicating with family and friends.

The community held fundraisers for the injured officer Friday.

The La Porte County Sheriff's Office is selling Sammy Strong bracelets.

Deputies selling the bracelets say they're already inching toward 2,000 sold so far. They cost $5 each, with all proceeds going to the Samuelson family.

"Jon is a fantastic officer; it's troubling to say the least to see one of your guys injured or hurt in-the-line-of-duty. But we just want to be there in support any way we can, and this is our way of showing support," Midnight Patrol Deputy Austin Howell said. "Jon is in good spirits and with his family. And as you all saw he was just reunited with his K9, Bosco. That was good to see."

The sheriff's office says many business are stepping up with their own fundraisers, finding any way to help.

Rod Krassow stopped by to buy 10 bracelets, as he says he knows the deputy's family and helped train his beloved K9 partner, Bosco.

"It's been really rough; I hate seeing any police officer go through that. But when you know the person, and I know his father, it's been really rough," Krassow said.

The sheriff's office says they plan to continue doing fundraisers like this. Just keep an eye out for their social media.

Grafton is due back in court on June 12.
