CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police are investigating after a man was critically injured in a shooting near Foster Beach in the Uptown neighborhood.

Police said the 24-year-old victim was shot in the chest near the 5100-block of N. Simonds Drive just before 8:30 p.m. He also suffered a graze wound to the neck.

He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

The shooting comes the same week Chicago police announced the formation of a new mobile unit that will patrol the lakefront.

With the weather heating up, Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson met with community leaders Friday night who are hoping for a peaceful weekend.

But it's not starting out that way. Besides the man wounded along the lakefront, a woman and 5-year-old girl were shot in Marquette Park near 68th and Artesian. The girl was shot in the foot, police said.

"She was out here, standing right here. And I guess when the bullet hit her in her foot and she was bleeding, she was just screaming and crying," said Valerie Bolden, her aunt.

Police said the 5-year-old girl is in good condition. No information was immediately available on the woman's condition.
