Wheaton animal shelter receives nearly $100K donation: 'This gift means lives are being saved'

WHEATON, Ill. (WLS) -- One man is giving a local animal rescue shelter nearly $100,000.

It's helping the Animal Rescue Foundation in Wheaton get up and running in a tough economy.

The average monthly bill is over $30,000. So the donation is a saving grace, and comes at a critical time, when the number of animals in need is going up.

"We received $99,400 and some change," A.R.F. President Ann Persenaire said.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime blessing that came when the Animal Rescue Foundation needed it most.

"On an average month, we might have that bills of $20,000. The past few months it's been well into the $30,000s," Persenaire said.

Persenaire said most of the cost comes from the medical bills of the nearly 51 dogs and over 200 cats in their foster-based animal rescue.

"It's all volunteer. You go anywhere else, there's somebody getting paid somewhere, and they don't get any government money. Everything is donation," donor John Kararo said.

It's big part of the reason Kararo made the decision to donate his residuals from a recent class action lawsuit he was involved in to A.R.F.

"People get help from the government: animals don't. They can't go and stand in line for SNAP," Kararo said.

The animal lover says he's saved his own pets from being euthanized, and was firm in finding a no-kill shelter to give the large sum of money. He just happened to stumble upon this one. But he doesn't want the donations to stop with him.

"The actual amount of the bill that they have every month, so this isn't near enough," Kararo said.

There's more work to be done, but no one can deny this donation helps tremendously.

"This gift means lives are being saved, period," Persenaire said.

A.R.F. said they plan to put the money toward the medical expenses for animals with special needs and a new building to expand their space.
