Man with Down syndrome saves all year to donate to South Elgin Toys for Tots campaign

SOUTH ELGIN, Ill. (WLS) -- A suburban man is really getting into the holiday spirit of giving.

He saves up all year to buy toys for children in need, through the Toys for Tots program.

David Luplow, 35, was born with Down syndrome, but he doesn't let that stop him.

Luplow was recently practicing math with his teacher at Rising Lights Project in Saint Charles. The school is a place for adults with Down syndrome and other disabilities

"David is the life of the party, loves Elvis," said Jessica Trevino, with Rising Lights Project.

And despite the struggles he deals with, he is more concerned about helping others. That's why he saves money all year to buy toys to donate to the South Elgin Fire District Toys for Tots campaign.

"Boys and girls games, puzzles, coloring books," Luplow said.

This year Luplow saved enough to buy nearly 100 toys to donate. He shops with his parents for the gifts then drops them off at the station.

"I love it, makes me feel like we've done something right as parents," mother Patty Luplow said.

"Proud dad, oh yes, very proud," father David Luplow Sr. said.

The firefighters have served as a drop-off for toys for years. And they say the community has always responded, but Luplow's efforts take things to a new level.

"Tremendous amount of selflessness, lot of giving and thinking of others," Fire Chief William Luchsinger said.

While the toys are on their way to Christmas trees all around Kane County, they say they will continue to collect toys at the fire station, and hope Luplow's generosity is contagious.
