The incident occurred at about 12:02 a.m. in the 2700-block of West Washington Boulevard.
Police said the victim was awakened by two people who had gotten inside the residence.
Police said the man's family, a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man, arrived during the encounter.
Before running out, one of the suspects fired a shot toward the victims before fleeing through the front door, police said.
The 28-year-old man was injured in the leg and taken to a hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
No other injuries were reported and no one is in custody, police said. Area Three detectives are investigating.
