CHICAGO (WLS) -- Democrats in Washington, D.C. have threatened to vote against funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security after the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis Minnesota.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker spoke Wednesday about his reaction to the calls from some to get rid of ICE altogether and what he says needs to happen in the future.

Mourners at a vigil Wednesday night outside the Jesse Brown V.A. Medical Center called on Congress to cut off funding for DHS.

"His death will be remembered in our history as a stain on our democracy," a mourner said.

While many Democrats, including Pritzker's own Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, are calling to abolish ICE, Governor Pritzker weighed in on where he stands on the issue as well the departure of Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino.

The fatal shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti has not only resulted in a call for federal agents to be removed from Minneapolis, but for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be eliminated altogether.

"I want to abolish ICE, this agency cannot be reformed," Lt. Governor Stratton, a candidate for U.S. Senate, said.

However, Pritzker, who earlier laid flowers at Pretti's memorial at Jesse Brown, says an overhaul is needed and believes ICE can be reformed.

"We need to have people who are actually professionally prepared to do law enforcement and instead of taking away people's constitutional rights," Pritzker said.

Governor Pritzker supports immigration enforcement, but not the way the Trump administration is doing it. He is encouraged by the departure of Border Patrol Commander Greg Bavino, but Pritzker says Kristi Noem, Tom Homan and Stephen Miller should all be removed as well.

"They need to be held accountable, because killings took place and it was under their orders," Pritzker said.

Pritzker stands with Senate Democrats who are urging republicans to remove Department of Homeland Security funding from a package of bills to fund the government.

"They're now going to spend a whole bunch of money building up what can only be described as a secret police force at ICE, where they're going to multiply by seven the amount of money that will go into ICE," Pritzker said.

Meanwhile, speaking at the National Press Club in Washington on Wednesday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says he will soon announce new policies aimed at holding federal agency's criminally accountable for misconduct, and he's exploring a new executive order.

"We are working on additional measures that we believe will make Chicago the first city in the country to be able to effectively hold ICE and border patrol officers accountable for criminal misconduct," Johnson said.

Senate Democrats are holding out until ICE is reined in or overhauled.

Facing a partial government shutdown with a deadline Friday, Republicans say they are waiting for the Democrats' demands, accusing them of putting the interests of undocumented criminals over the safety of Americans.

"Democrats are once again threatening to shut down the government and Democrats are once again prioritizing illegal immigrants over American safety and American citizens," Republican Senator from Wyoming John Barrasso said.
