CHICAGO (WLS) -- A stolen puppy was safely returned to a Chicago shelter on Monday afternoon, Anti-Cruelty said.

Anti-Cruelty said Peter, a 2-month-old Dachshund mix, was taken from their shelter at 510 North La Salle Drive in River North on Sunday evening.

The shelter said Peter needs specialized care because of his age, and there was concern for his safety. But someone safely returned him on Monday.

"This story touched so many people, and we felt the outpouring of support from near and far. Every like, comment, and share helped spread the word and bring Peter back to safety-and we can't thank you enough for rallying behind him," Anti-Cruelty said in a statement. "We are also grateful that the individuals involved ultimately chose to return Peter safely. Our focus now is on Peter's wellbeing and finding him the loving home he deserves."
