CHICAGO (WLS) -- The officer that was shot and critically wounded in a shooting that killed his partner last month is being moved to a rehabilitation facility Thursday, his family said.

Officer Nelson Crespo was still in the intensive care unit earlier this week. But his sister, Nancy, said he is being transferred Thursday.

"It will be a miracle if he can ever walk again," she said.

On Monday, family said Crespo is now able to breathe on his own for several hours at a time.

The 57-year-old was shot in-the-line-of-duty April 25, after he and his partner, CPD Officer John Bartholomew, had transported a robbery suspect to Swedish Hospital for an exam.

The shooting killed Officer Bartholomew and left Officer Crespo critically injured.

Nancy Crespo says their family is rallying around the 21-year CPD veteran, lifelong Chicagoan and doting uncle by raising money for his medical and future expenses so he can get back behind the grill and tell jokes.
