Chicago Cubs host Washington Nationals for Opening Day 2026, losing 10-4

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Major League Baseball is back.

The Chicago Cubs opened their season at Wrigley Field against the Washington Nationals.

Cubs fans didn't get the result they wanted as the team lost to the Nationals, 10-4.

First pitch was at 1:20 p.m. Left-hander Matthew Boyd will start for the Cubs.

This season also marks the 10th anniversary of the Cubs 2016 World Series win.

Cubs fans shared their excitement prior to the start of the game.

"Go every year," Cubs fan Cyndi Sosnowski said. "Rain or shine, cold weather, warm weather, which is nice today."

It was one of the nicer Opening Days the Cubs have had as fans patiently waited to come back to Wrigley Field with high expectations.

"World Series for sure," Sosnowski said. "That's always the expectation."

"I think just that first sight of Wrigley Field, when you walk in and like the awe and the inspiration, that's it, that moment, that's, that's what we're looking forward to," Cubs fan Jake Tabel said.

And the team is helping fans show their pride, with its heritage jerseys.

"Greek heritage. We've got all the designs around the bottom, Greek flag on it, kind of the baby blue look," Cubs senior VP of ticketing Cale Vennum said.

To a little bit of Hello Kitty and something to celebrate Star Wars, they even had a few dogs out here to give the field a blessing.

"We were able to partner with photographer Gray Malin this year," Jennifer Martindale, Cubs marketing and communications, said. "He did a whole dogs of Wrigley Field photo series that you can buy on Gray Malin's website."

But ultimately, it's the fans that make the experience and this baseball holiday comes with perfect timing.

"I'm a teacher," Cubs fan Ryan Schlitz said. "We never get Opening Day but it's spring break!"

The White Sox were on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday.
