Brain aneurysm survivor seriously injured in hit-and-run while running in Greektown: family

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The last 24 hours have been like a nightmare for one Chicagoland family.

Kelly Mahan, 44, is now hospitalized after being seriously injured in a West Side hit-and-run crash on Saturday evening.

"It's heartbreaking. It's horrific. It's disgusting," the victim's sister said.

Police said the crash happened in the Greektown neighborhood's 0-100-block of South Halsted Street at about 5:45 p.m.

"Sounds like they just took off like no nothing. It's so bad. It's so terrible. I don't know how someone could do that," said Kevin Garcia, who works nearby.

Mahan's sister, who preferred to not use her name, said the victim was running across Madison Street when a car hit her and kept going.

"My sister has been in surgery for six hours. She has three broken ribs, a broken ankle," Mahan's sister said. "Thank God there were amazing other civilians that helped her, called an ambulance. She had no phone, no ID. She could have died."

Police said the driver of a Toyota Rav 4 struck Mahan. The driver did not stop and fled the scene southbound on Halsted.

Mahan was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said. Her family says she has many broken bones and may have some internal injuries.

Some Chicagoans have been concerned about safety in West Loop area, especially on Madison Street.

"There's been this boom in growth, but safety and concern for pedestrians and cyclists alike has lagged behind that growth," said Moshe Tamssot with True West Loop.

Mahan's passion is running. Her family told ABC7 after surviving a brain aneurysm a few years ago, running was her therapy, and she went on to run competitively. But for now, she is facing a series of medical hurdles.

"There's more and more surgeries. She's in the trauma unit. We are just praying," Mahan's sister said.

No one is in custody and CPD's Major Accidents Unit is investigating.
