The Archdiocese of Chicago announced Queen of Martyrs, which has served families in the Evergreen Park area for more than 70 years, will not reopen for the 2026-2027 school year.
In a letter to families, the archdiocese said many students were not planning to return and the enrollment level was not sustainable.
Projected enrollment fell to 140 students next year. That's down from more than 325 students, from a decade ago.
The school also projected a deficit of more than $400,000.
The decision comes months after parents expressed outrage after learning a substitute teacher at the school had previously been accused of child molestation. That person was later fired and barred from the school grounds.
In the letter to families, school administrators acknowledged this, saying, "Events earlier this year, including concerns related to a personnel matter, shook the trust of some families and contributed to their decision to leave. That reality is painful to acknowledge. At the same time, the school's challenges did not begin this year and are not the result of a single event."
A digital sign outside of the school shows a message thanking teachers and faculty for their years of dedication and service.
The school posted to Facebook, saying, "It is with great sadness that our school will be closing."
The archdiocese says it will announce options for families in the coming days.
