Rev. Jesse Jackson's family speaks with ABC7 in South Carolina before services continue

CHICAGO (WLS) -- More tributes are planned this week for the late Reverend Jesse Jackson in his home state of South Carolina and back in Chicago.

Jackson will be honored Monday in the State Capitol building in Columbia, South Carolina.

ABC7 Chicago's Cheryl Burton spoke with Jackson's family in South Carolina Sunday night.

The motto for the state of South Carolina is "Dum spiro spero." It is Latin for "While I breathe, I hope." It is a mantra that embodies the life's work of the native son who has come home to rest.

As part of his homegoing services, Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. will be honored at the State Capital.

Sunday night, before the regal and royal celebrations begin, generations of the Jackson family gathered in South Carolina to reflect on the service, sacrifice and their gratitude for the civil rights leader.

A memorial caravan traveled to Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday, ushering his body in a brand new hearse driven by Chicago-based funeral home Leak & Sons traveling through six states. It has been a monumental mission of history and pride.

His foundation as a civil rights champion began with his upbringing in South Carolina. Jackson was born in the segregated town of Greenville. His mother, Helen Burns, was a high school student at the time.

Jesse was taught to ride in the back of the bus and denied access to the public library, injustices that fueled his inspiration to become a freedom fighter, and Rev. Jackson said he never left the battle field.

The civil rights icon lie in repose at the State Capital on Monday. However, Rev. Jackson's widow, Jacqueline Jackson, will not be in attendance. She fell ill in Nashville and is still hospitalized as of Sunday night.
