Police said Lyndale Roberts Jr., 18, has been charged with felony counts of aggravated battery along with several misdemeanor counts.
Police said Roberts along with two 15-year-olds, a boy and girl, beat up a 62-year-old passenger on the Cicero Avenue bus last Tuesday, Dec. 16.
The crime happened around 5:40 p.m. in the 700-block of South Cicero Avenue, as the bus approached I-290 from Roosevelt Road, police said.
The beating lead to "extensive and ongoing hospitalization of the victim," CPD said. The victim's nephew, Tavarris Harvey, shared pictures, taken in happier times, with ABC7.
He told ABC7 that his uncle, Larry Gilkey, suffered severe head injuries in the attack and had to be put in a medically induced coma.
"He's awake now. He's able to communicate very little. He doesn't remember a lot. He doesn't know how he got where he is," he said.
Harvey says the doctors told him his uncle will have to undergo rehab. And whenever he returns home, he will need daily assistance.
Roberts and the teens are each facing multiple felony battery charges.
Police said Roberts is also charged in connection with "criminal trespass to a vehicle" and "possessing burglary tools" for an incident that happened on Sunday in the 5600-block of West Bloomingdale Avenue.
Roberts was ordered detained on Tuesday, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. His next court date is set for Monday in Skokie.
