SHOREWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- A state senator's home was damaged after gunshots rang outside her house in the south suburbs on Tuesday.

"I experienced a deeply troubling incident when a shot was fired directly at our home," State Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel said.

The shooting happened at about 4:50 a.m. in the area of Ca-Crest Drive and Highland Drive.

Police said two homes were damaged in the shooting.

"It should be noted that the owners of the two residences are not known to each other, and have no common affiliations," police said.

On Wednesday, police said a suspect was taken into custody.

Shorewood police said the shooting appeared to be random.

"My family and I are safe and I'm thankful that no one was hurt. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement as they continue their investigation," Cappel said.
