St. Patrick HS students raise money for fallen Chicago police officer, firefighter

CHICAGO (WLS) -- As Chicago mourns the loss of murdered police officer, high school kids are stepping up to help the family.

Chicago Police Officer John Bartholomew was shot and killed at Swedish Hospital on Saturday morning.

He leaves behind a wife and children.

Wednesday morning, students at St. Patrick High School ran a drive thru coffee sale.

One hundred percent of sales, will go to his family, as well as the family of fallen Firefighter Michael Altman.

Given the recent tragedies the Chicago police and fire departments have experiences lately, students at St. Patrick High School on the city's Northwest Side came up with an idea to give back to our first responders.

Just having opened earlier this school year at St. Pat's High School, part of a business program idea, "Brother Joe's" coffee shop - took on a different mission Wednesday.

"It's just something that the school always taught us to do, just give back," junior student Rocco Moroko said.

The fully student-run coffee shop held their first ever "drive-thru" fundraiser to benefit the families of fallen CPD Officer John Bartholomew and CFD Firefighter Michael Altman, who die din March.

The idea came from junior Rocco Moroko, whose brother is currently a CFD firefighter.

"When that firefighter died, it really made me think that he can go at any time and the families affected by that it's horrible for them so we've got to give back as much as possible," Moroko said.

His brother and his battalion even stopped by to support the cause and thank the boys for what they're doing.

"The police and first responders are a big part of our culture here. We have a lot of sons of fireman and police officers, we have a lot of alarm who are fire and police officers, and when they came up with this idea, I wasn't surprised," St. Patrick HS Principal John Harrington said. "This is how our guys always think. How can we give back to those people?"

Car after car of customers, whether parents of students, or just people who live nearby came for a cup of coffee, like retired police officer, Sonia Moriarty.

"These guys are great," Moriarty said. "They do so much these students they really do they do a lot."

"I graduated in 1970," graduate Ken Presslak said. "I still live in the neighborhood and it's a wonderful idea."

"When you know this person, it really hits home," Susie Bibian, who lives nearby, said.

Bibian is friends with Officer Bartholomew's now widow and said she was touched by the effort.

"It's great that people from everywhere are fundraising and doing whatever they can just to be there for their family," Bibian said. "I know they're recently married. They just had a daughter and I mean anything helps just showing up."

Rocco hopes people are left with this one message.:

"I want them to always think to give back even when they're struggling themselves because there's someone out there who's probably doing much worse," he said.
