Police are working to disperse groups at 57th Street Beach, which is near Hyde Park.
People were seen trying to climbing over a wall and trying to cross the street as police warned them to get back.
Citizen video captured the show of force from a nearby building, showing several police cars lining the lakefront as police tried to reroute traffic with hundreds of people all around.
A Chicago police helicopter was over the crowd of people and the traffic backup that ensued.

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications said there is heavy traffic on northbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive at East 57th Drive. Part of the drive was shut down for some time, and OEMC asked drivers to take an alternate route.
So far, police have not said if there have been any injuries, but ABC7 cameras saw two officers escorting another officer and loading him into an ambulance.
This comes after the University of Chicago Police Department said it received information about a possible teen trend gathering at the beach planned for Monday at 6 p.m. UCPD said additional staff would be in the area.
Late Monday, police could be seen lining 57th Street as the crowd continued to linger in the area.

Meanwhile, another chaotic scene has developed near North Avenue Beach, where a large crowd gathered on Monday night.
Video from the scene shows police trying to break up the crowd, which appears to be snarling traffic on DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
